Actress Mary Mara’s cause of death has been determined just days after her body was found drowned in a river in New York.
Local police confirmed to people magazine that the ER and Ray Donovan star died of asphyxiation, or suffocation, due to drowning. She was 61.
“The Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office performed a post-mortem examination on the decadent and determined that the decadent’s manner of death was an accident, due to asphyxiation, due to warm water drowning,” NYSP Troop D Public Information Officer Jack Keller said.

initially, TMZ reported that investigators believed Mara had hit her head before her tragic drowning – they speculated that the actress may have slipped and hit her head while getting out of the river.
However, police have since determined that “there were no signs of any trauma to Mary’s body when she was found”.

Mara died on Sunday morning local time while swimming in the St. Lawrence River in Cape Vincent, New York, while in town to visit her sister Martha. Her body was discovered by troopers at around 8am after they received a call for a possible drowning.
“The preliminary investigation suggests the victim drowned while swimming,” police wrote in the statement at the time. “The victim’s body showed no signs of foul play and was transported to the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office pending an autopsy to determine an official cause of death.”

With more than 81 acting credits to her name, Mara made a name for herself in Hollywood. Most notable was her role dela as Loretta Sweet in ER for nine episodes between 1995 and 1996. The actress’ credits also include roles in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Star Trek: Enterprise, Nip/Tuck and The Practice.
She also starred alongside Billy Crystal in the 1992 film Mr. Saturday Night.
Mara’s last acting credit was a 2020 role in Break Even, and prior to that, in 2013 she starred as Mrs Sullivan on Ray Donovan and Nance on Shameless.
