Nicolas Cage and his wife Riko Shibata have welcomed a baby girl into their family.
Shibata gave birth to their daughter on Wednesday in Los Angeles, California, and named her August Francesca Coppola Cage after the actor’s late father, August Coppola. A representative for the pair confirmed the happy news to people in a statement that read, “Nicolas and Riko are happy to announce the birth of their daughter. Mother and daughter are doing fine.” August is Shibata’s first child and Cage’s third. The actor is also father to 31-year-old Weston and 16-year-old Kal-El from his previous relationships with actress Christina Fulton and Alice Kimrespectively.
people was also first to break the news that the couple were expecting in January of this year before Cage ultimately confirmed it on The Kelly Clarkson Show in April. “I’m gonna announce some big news for everyone,” he said at the time. “I am gonna have a little girl…It’s going to be the biggest adventure of my life.” That same month, he also told Access Hollywood that he was “extremely excited” to become a father all over again. He explained, “My boys are all grown up, and I miss going to the toy store. I miss singing lullabies and rocking in the rocking chair. I’m looking forward to getting back to that.”
In yet another interview that month, this time for the cover of QA, Cage also shared that he and Shibata already had names picked out for the baby and shared a two-month ultrasound with the writer, saying, “I think it’s so sweet. It’s like a little edamame. The little bean.” The pig star explained that, if it was a boy, they intended on naming him Akira Francesco and, if it’s a girl, Lennon Augie. “Augie was my father’s nickname. And my uncle has decided to change his name to Francesco, ”he said, referring to the director Francis Ford Coppola. Although, those plans clearly changed slightly in the following months.
Cage and Shibata wed at a very small, intimate ceremony held at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas on February 16 of last year, a date chosen to commemorate Cage’s late father’s birthday. The pair first met in Shiga, Japan through mutual friends over a year prior. Cage spoke about that first meeting during an appearance on Entertainment Tonight in July, sharing the exact moment he knew their relationship could make it for the long haul. “We met in Japan and I thought she was stunning when I met her. We had a lot in common,” he explained. The actor added that it does not hurt that, “she likes animals, too. So, I asked her, ‘Do you have any pets?’ And she said, ‘Yes, I have flying squirrels.’ She had two sugar gliders…I thought, ‘That’s it. This, this could work out.’” And he was right as, last August, he announced during an appearance on his brother Marc “The Cope” Coppola‘s radio show that he had proposed to Shibata over FaceTime and then sent her engagement ring to Japan via FedEx.
