Key Points:
- Google now offers virtual try-ons for dresses using generative AI.
- The tool was previously available for men’s and women’s tops.
- Shoppers can view clothing on diverse, real models in various sizes.
Google has enhanced its virtual try-on tool by introducing dresses to its AI-powered feature. This expansion allows users to see how dresses from various brands would look on virtual models, with lifelike details such as wrinkles, shadows, and fabric draping.
Initially launched for tops, the virtual try-on feature now includes dresses from popular brands like Boden, Straud, SIMKHAI, and Maje. Shoppers can search for dresses on Google, select an item marked with the “try-on” badge, and see how it looks on real models ranging from XXS to XXXL. Once a shopper finds a model that matches their body type, they can easily navigate to the retailer’s website to purchase the item.
This tool leverages generative AI using a technique based on diffusion, which generates each pixel from scratch, ensuring highly realistic images of how the clothing fits on different body types.
Challenges of Virtual Try-On for Dresses
Dresses posed unique challenges for Google’s AI team, as they often cover more of the body and feature intricate designs such as draping, ruffles, and prints. The AI models previously used for tops struggled to maintain the necessary level of detail for dresses, resulting in the development of a new technique called VTO-UNet Diffusion Transformer (VTO-UDiT). This ensures the accurate depiction of body details while preserving the integrity of the dress design.
Virtual Try-On at New York Fashion Week
In a special event tied to New York Fashion Week, Google will offer shoppers the chance to virtually try on dresses from SIMKHAI’s latest collection right after the brand’s runway show. Shoppers can search for “SIMKHAI dresses” on Google and use the virtual try-on feature to pre-order their favorite looks.
This new tool offers shoppers a more engaging and personalized shopping experience, blending the convenience of online shopping with the ability to visualize clothing in a realistic and detailed way.
